I love mini lip products because I can never finish a full-sized lipstick but I love trying new formulas and shades. I was thrilled to see NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Duos at Sephora because they seemed like such a convenient way to achieve matte lips without having to struggle with the time-consuming application of liquid lipsticks.
The duos are offered in three varieties but the one I chose contains Walkyrie and Damned. (This pairing is currently sold out at Sephora, but the full-sized are still available.)
On Sephora’s website, Walkyrie is described as a “warm coral red” and Damned as a “magenta”. (Lip swatches are at the end of the post!)
Price: Each duo costs $20 and contains two 0.06 oz Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. The full-size costs $27 and contains 0.086 oz of product, so you’re getting a pretty good deal in both quantity and variety.
Packaging: The Velvet Matte Lip Pencils have a matte black finish and a plastic bottom that accurately reflects the color of the pencil. This makes it very convenient to find the exact shade you’re looking for, especially if you have a lot of pencils that look similar. My one complaint is that you do have to sharpen the pencil to get more product, which is a bit of a hassle.
Texture: It’s a smooth texture that glides easily over the lips, but isn’t overly creamy. The formula contains vitamin E and emollients that keep your lips hydrated and comfortable!
Application: The best thing about this lip pencil is that you don’t need a lip liner to stay inside the lines; the jumbo pencil allows for a precise application is very quick and easy. The color does apply fairly patchy (Damned more so than Walkyrie), which is disappointing given the amount of pigment NARS claims it has but darker shades are notoriously more difficult to formulate. One note: if you tend to use lip balm before applying matte lipsticks, make sure to wipe off any excess because the lip balm will make it difficult for the lip pencil pigment to adhere to your lips.
Wear-Time: The Velvet Matte Lip Pencils can be worn alone or as lip liner under another lip product, but I usually wear this alone because I’m always looking for the most convenient solution. I can get a good five hours of wear out of these Lip Pencils if I don’t eat and only drink sparingly. The color does transfer and definitely won’t hold up through a meal of any kind; I had tacos the last time I wore Damned and even though I was very careful when eating, it did rub off on the inner lip, as you can see below!
Quick Hack: I didn’t have the Lip Pencil with me, so rather than wipe off the rest of the lipstick, I salvaged what was left by applying lip balm all over my lips. Using my finger, I sort of mixed the lip balm with what was left of the pigment to create a sheerer color, more of a lip stain than a lipstick that was actually quite pretty! This trick works with most liquid and traditional lipsticks!
Where it lacks in staying power and pigmentation, the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils make up for it in convenience and comfort. The Lip Pencils come in a variety of shades so you’re sure to find one you like! I’m still on the fence about whether or not I’ll repurchase these; maybe if I find a more unique color, I’ll consider purchasing it.
Walkyrie pulls more of a brick red than a coral red on me. It’s a very warm and wearable shade, one of my favorites to wear — I have too many lipsticks in this color!
Damned is less magenta and more berry on my lips. Berries aren’t my favorite shades to wear because I feel like they don’t suit my skin tone, but I don’t mind this one that much.
Have you tried the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils? What’s your favorite lip color to wear?
