SKINFOOD Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff | Review

When it comes to getting smooth and even skin texture, exfoliation is the most important step. I tend to use only chemical exfoliants because my skin can be sensitive to physical exfoliants, but the SKINFOOD Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff is one that I’ve been using religiously since June and I can’t stop raving about it because it does so much more than just exfoliate!

PRICE: A 3.52 oz jar of this wash-off mask is just $11.50 at Ulta. I’ve been using this mask twice a week for several months now and I’ve only used up about half.

PACKAGING: The plastic jar isn’t the most sanitary. I would have loved a little scooper to avoid any contamination, as well as a cover/tray to avoid getting the mask on the lid when shaking to mix the honey and sugar together.

TEXTURE: Because the two main ingredients are sugar and honey, the texture is unsurprising: grainy from the sugar and goopy from the honey. The consistency is actually quite thick, but you can dilute it with water to make it easier to spread and to make it a more gentle exfoliation.

SMELL: As someone who loves honey (both for my skincare and to eat), I think the smell is divine. It smells very natural, without additional artificial fragrance. If you aren’t crazy about the smell of honey, though, be warned that it’s pretty strong and you will be marinating in it for a while, even after you’ve washed it off.

APPLICATION: In my routine, I apply wash-off masks at night (when I have more time) after cleansing and before toning. When I first opened the mask, the sugar had sunk to the bottom so I did have to stir and shake the jar to re-mix it, which was a bit of a hassle. (The good thing, though, is that the mask hasn’t separated since!) I always apply the mask to my damp face because otherwise, the mixture would be difficult to spread and too rough of an exfoliant. I lightly rub the mask around my face in tiny circles, both clockwise and counterclockwise, for about thirty seconds.

The instructions say to leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes, which I think is plenty of time for the product to work its magic. Sometimes, if I’m in a rush or if I’m feeling lazy, I’ll leave it on for just a few minutes and I still get most of the benefits. The mask washes off easily with warm water (although it feels so good that I just want to leave it on forever!). With other physical exfoliants, I sometimes have trouble washing off all of the little grains but I’ve never had a problem with this mask.

EFFECTIVENESS: I love how this mask makes my skin feel after I’ve used it: smooth, nourished, and glowing. What’s so amazing about this mask is the double-duty combination of sugar and honey. The grains of sugar do an amazing job of sloughing away dead skin and evening out any irregular skin texture, while the honey moisturizes and soothes my skin. When I follow with my other products, I find that they go on more easily and absorb more quickly.

My gripe about the packaging is small but there’s always a nagging worry of contamination. Otherwise, a nearly perfect product because with both honey and sugar, it really is greater than the sum of its parts. The SKINFOOD Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff is both a gentle exfoliant and a nourishing mask that I will definitely be repurchasing whenever I run out.
